All summer we have meant to spend a weekend camping as a family. Things apparently came up... like girl's camp, monthly scout camp-outs, working on our basement, a trip to ATL, visitors at our house, etc. etc... So, last weekend we finally had the opportunity to go camping. It was quite the adventure in the middle of October in the mountains with two small children! It started very nicely with an uneventful 1.5 hr drive coordinated with nap time, we set up camp and had lunch. We enjoyed a short hike, threw rocks in the lake we were next to, and had a great dinner with s'mores as a treat. Then it was bed time... this is probably the worst night of my nights as a mother! Katie wanted to jump on the air mattress and when Tyler would fall asleep she would steal his binky, waking him up. She would not sleep in the sleeping bag/under any blankets we brought because she felt restrained (and we all know that being restrained is the most torturous thing for our Katie-bug!). Finally Katie fell asleep. Then Tyler would not sleep. He kept waking up, why I do not know- he was toasty warm in all the layers I put him in... I know because I kept checking, in retrospect he may have woken up from being too warm? Anyway his crying eventually woke up Katie, who was inconsolable. We would get everyone settled down again and then one would wake up 15-30 minutes later and the whole thing would start over! Finally Katie woke up and she was freezing, despite my best efforts at keeping her warm, but not constrained. Jared finally got her calmed down and tucked into his sleeping bag, while he was trying to figure out where he was going to sleep Katie in the calmest voice ever said "Daddy go to sleep, you are keeping me awake". We had a great laugh at this as she was the one keeping us awake! We ended up ditching our tent and camping gear in the middle of the night. We just picked up the kiddos and put them in the car and drove the 1.5 hours home to our nice, warm beds. We had to go back up to camp and pack up our stuff later in the weekend. Aside from the bedtime fiasco I do look forward to next year's attempt... we will definitley plan that prior to freezing October nights!
As for a quick update on our family...
Jared and I are just keeping busy with work and life. We have been on a hiatus from working on the basement, but I have a feeling that is ending very soon. Electrical work, here we come!
Katie turned 2 in September. She is quite the story teller and negotiator. It is not uncommon for her to say "one more time" or "do ____ first" to try to get what she wants. She finally figured out how to climb our of her crib (honestly I can't believe it took her so long), so she is now sleeping with the front side open. She definitely is an independent soul who knows what she wants!
Tyler is now 8 months old. He is eating pureed foods, has 3 teeth, and is crawling. He continues to be a happy boy that is easy going and joy to be around as long as he is fed and given a little attention! He is turning into an explorer and is starting to be busy, like his big sister. I have a feeling things are going to be much crazier around here in the next few months.
Hope you are all doing well!
